CAN YOU COOK DINNER TONIGHT?

In one of our previous entries in the blog we read that the famous Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps ate around 12,000 calories every day when he was training.

However, when people talk about the calories in food, what do they mean? Well, a calorie is a unit of measurement — but it doesn't measure weight or length. A calorie is a unit of ENERGY. When you hear something contains 100 calories, it's a way of describing how much energy your body could get from eating or drinking it. We need calories to stay alive, but eating too many — and not burning enough of them off through activity — can lead to weight gain. So, it is a great idea to play and be active for 1 hour or more every day. That means time spent playing sports, playing outside, or riding your bike. Being active every day keeps your body strong and can help you maintain a healthy weight.

Now you have some idea of what calories are you are going to watch a video which will explain a little bit more. Watch it with the English subtitles on to help you.

WHAT IS A CALORIE?

Well, your first task now is now is to find out how many calories there are in some tasty breakfasts:

HOW MANY CALORIES?

They are quite filling, aren’t they? We usually don’t eat so much for breakfast, they are more typical of Great Britain or the States.
When we prepare a meal, we have to think about the calories, and also about the nutrients it provides us. So, now it is your turn for preparing something to eat. You will watch a video on how to prepare a balanced dish, not only in calories, but also in nutrients. Ready to watch and become a cook?

Ok, so your final task which will be published in ‘Sport & Health’ is the preparation of healthy dinners for our readers. You have two options for that:

  • Prepare something like the photo, but adapted to your task: cut out 5 plates, write the weekdays on each of them from Monday to Friday, and inside show each dinner you would prepare. It can be picture, text, or both. (Make sure it is clear to understand and it is good quality)

  • Instead of doing that, you can actually cook (if mum/dad allow you to) and send a photo of the plate you have prepared. One is enough, more are welcome.
BON APPETITE!

REMEMBER TO UPLOAD YOUR WORK IN YOUR FOLDER IN THE NATURAL SCIENCE CANAL.

Ah, in case you are curious, here is a link where you fill in your details and will give you how many calories you need just to remain alive without moving in any way, being totally relaxed.

This next link will tell you how many calories you burn everyday. You can compare what you take in (through food and drink) with what you burn.
