Chariots of Fire - The Olympics in the Movies
The most famous film about The Olympic Games ever made is, without
doubt, the 1981 movie "Chariots of Fire", written by Colin Welland
and directed by Hugh Hudson. It tells the story of its two main characters as
they prepare for and then compete in the 1924 Olympic Games held in Paris. Eric
Liddle, played by Ian Charleson, is a very religious Scottish athlete who runs
for the glory of God, while Harold Abrahams, played by Ben Cross, is an English
Jew who runs to overcome prejudice.
The film won four Oscars
at the 54th Academy Awards in Hollywood, including Best Film and Best Original
Score for the music written by Jon Vangelis.
